Dominican American artist Firelei Báez was preparing a project for the summer of 2020 when the pandemic hit. The installation was postponed by a year, but if anything, the delay allowed the roots of Báez’s commentary on transnational revolutionary histories and Afro-Caribbean diasporic narratives to grow deeper. Firelei Báez (b. 1981, Dominican Republic) received an M.F.A. from Hunter College, a B.F.A. from the Cooper Union’s School of Art, and studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. About the artist. Firelei Báez was born in Santiago de los Caballeros, a city bordering Haiti in the Dominican Republic, in 1981. Informed by having a Dominican mother and father of Haitian descent, Báez’s early sense of place and belonging deepened once she relocated to Miami, Florida at the age of eight years old.
